• Do you want voice or video messages, not just photos? Birthdays lean into this hard. Graduations sometimes.

• Are people contributing from far away? Diaspora families, classmates who've already moved away, grandparents who can't travel.

• How long do you need to keep the album? A keepsake you'll revisit for years, or a fun album you'll download once and archive?

A word on privacy — it matters for both, and especially for kids

Whether it's a graduation or a kids' birthday, you're collecting photos of real people, sometimes minors. Gathmo stores all media in the EU (Frankfurt data centres), with data-processing agreements in place with its processors. The album is only visible to people you share the link with — it isn't publicly indexed — and a guest's photo can be deleted on request.

This is more than a nice-to-have. Under the GDPR, a host collecting guests' photos is acting as a data controller and should give guests a clear information notice at the point of upload — who's collecting the photos, why, and on what basis (GDPR Art. 13). Guests also have the right to ask for their photos to be erased, which the controller must action without undue delay and within one month (GDPR Art. 17, Art. 12(3)). For children's events there's an extra wrinkle: in Germany the digital age of consent is 16, so for younger children consent rests with the parent (GDPR Art. 8). A quick note on placing your QR code at either party

Both events live or die on whether guests actually scan the code. A couple of tested specs help:

• Table cards want a QR code of roughly 3–5 cm, sized for a seated guest scanning from about 30–50 cm away (QR Insights).

• An A-frame or standing sign by the door — great for a busy graduation entrance — needs a larger code, around 10–25 cm, for people scanning from a metre or two away (Uniqode).
• Keep a clear blank margin around the code (the "quiet zone"), use dark-on-light, and test-print and scan it yourself before you make a hundred copies (DENSO WAVE).
